It is probably advisable that the student use a Style Manual as a guide for his essay. This is a required text book for many courses. Some professors prefer the Modern Language Association Publication Manual while others prefer the Publication of the American Psychological Association style manual. Other style manuals include the Chicago Manual of Style or Strunk and White’s ‘The Element of Style’. The APA Manual is generally used for those enrolled in schools of Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, Criminology, Health Sciences, Business, Economics, or Education. The Modern Language Association Manual is generally used for Humanities, Literature, History, Philosophy, Art, etc.
In order to produce a quality academic essay, it is important that certain elements be in place. There are several logical steps one must take to construct the paper. These steps may include the following:
The document should be written clearly and simply so that the layman can understand it. However, it is important to use specialized terms when discussing the subject matter to convey mastery over the subject. The author should begin each paragraph with a topic sentence and discuss one aspect of the argument that lends toward the continuity of the discussion. The author should be sure to develop the theme of the composition as each paragraph ensues.
The student should remember that all essays should be checked for grammar and spelling issues. The student may select a friend with whom to proofread the essay. Submission to a second checklist can address grammar and spelling issues.
Finally, the truly amazing essay should convey the passion of the student. The student can begin by asking himself where his passion lies. He may investigate the motivation of his pursuit of academic edification. Why did he choose to further his education? What was it he thought he would gain in the pursuit of further education? What events in his life triggered the central questions of his raison de etre?
Once the student answers these questions, he can convey to the reader his passion. His quest is to persuade the reader that his position is valid. He does this by facts and figures, which can back up his bias. But he must first establish a bias. He does this by first identifying his passion as described above. In addition the truly amazing essay will be free of any and all grammar and spelling issues and will flow smoothly from paragraph to paragraph to develop and argument and finally persuade the reader.
